Climbers Way Tree Care is proud to support Wokingham Borough Council through its Tree Maintenance Services Framework.

The framework helps the Council manage a large and varied tree stock across the borough. This includes young trees, mature trees and veteran trees in busy public places.

The Client

Wokingham Borough Council is responsible for more than 91,000 council-owned trees. These trees sit across a wide mix of public spaces, including highways, parks, schools, public rights of way, housing land, country parks, wildlife reserves and woodland areas.

The Council needed skilled arboricultural contractors who could provide safe, reliable and cost-effective tree maintenance through a structured framework.

The Challenge

Managing trees across a whole borough brings many challenges.

Works may take place near roads, homes, schools, footpaths, parks and public open spaces. Each site needs careful planning. Each tree needs the right approach.

The Council’s framework is designed to help meet its legal duty of care. It also helps protect the public, support long-term tree health and keep important public spaces safe and usable.

The Scope of Works

The arboricultural services covered by the framework include:

  • Pruning and formative pruning
  • Pollarding and re-pollarding
  • Crown lifting, crown thinning and crown reduction
  • Removal of dead, dying, diseased and broken branches
  • Tree felling and sectional dismantling where required
  • Coppicing and stump treatment
  • Removal of epicormic growth and suckers
  • Climbing inspections
  • Tree pest and disease control
  • Biosecurity measures for tree pests and pathogens

Our Approach

Climbers Way Tree Care brings a clear, safe and organised approach to public sector tree work.

Before starting each job, our teams assess the site, the tree, the public risks and the work required. This helps us choose the right method, protect the public and deliver the work to a high standard.

Where works are close to highways, footpaths or public areas, we set up clear work zones. We use signs, cones, barriers and safe working systems to protect residents, road users and our staff.

We also understand the importance of communication. Public tree work is visible. People care about their local trees. Our teams work in a polite, helpful and professional way on every site.

Technical Delivery

The framework requires tree works to be carried out in line with recognised arboricultural standards and industry guidance.

This includes careful pruning, safe climbing, correct use of machinery, well-maintained equipment and proper site-specific risk assessments.

For pruning works, our aim is simple. We remove what’s needed while keeping the tree balanced, safe and healthy. That may include lifting low branches from footpaths and roads, reducing branches away from property, removing deadwood, or reshaping a crown where needed.

For larger or more complex trees, work may involve climbing, rope work, MEWPs, sectional dismantling or traffic management. Each method is chosen to suit the tree, the site and the level of risk.

Public Safety and Community Value

This framework is about more than tree surgery. It’s about safe public spaces.

Well-planned tree maintenance helps reduce risk from damaged, diseased or unstable trees. It also keeps roads, paths, parks and community spaces open and accessible.

For schools and public sites, safeguarding and access planning are key. For highways, safe traffic and pedestrian management is vital. For parks and green spaces, the work must protect both people and the local environment.

Environmental Care and Biosecurity

Tree pests and diseases can spread through soil, timber, tools, vehicles and clothing. Good biosecurity helps reduce that risk.

Climbers Way Tree Care follows practical biosecurity controls as part of its arboricultural work. This includes cleaning tools and equipment when needed, managing arisings with care, and taking extra precautions around known or suspected tree pests and diseases.

Project Outcomes

Through this framework, Climbers Way Tree Care helps Wokingham Borough Council access qualified arboricultural contractors for planned and reactive tree maintenance.

The framework supports:

  • Safer trees across public spaces
  • Clearer access along highways, paths and rights of way
  • Better management of council-owned tree stock

  • Consistent standards across minor and major tree maintenance
  • Support for the Council’s long-term duty of care
