Portsmouth Sea Defence

Clearing the Way for Essential Coastal Protection

We were proud to be part of an exciting infrastructure project with Knights Brown, helping to strengthen Portsmouth’s sea defences against rising sea levels. Our role involved the removal of two miles of vegetation to enable the sea defence to be raised, a critical step in safeguarding the coastline.

Due to the scale and urgency of the project, we deployed a range of specialist machinery and skilled teams, including:

  • Grapple saw excavator – For safe and efficient tree removal
  • Forwarder – To transport felled materials quickly and efficiently
  • Crane-fed chipper – To process and clear large volumes of vegetation
  • Mulcher – For effective ground clearance
  • Felling teams – Handling complex removals in sensitive areas

Meeting Tight Deadlines with Precision

With a tight timeframe for completion, efficiency was key. By carefully planning our approach and coordinating with both Knights Brown and the council, we ensured the work was completed on schedule without compromising safety or environmental considerations.

Challenges & Solutions

This project presented several challenges, including:

  • Protected Wildlife – The presence of door mice required us to follow strict ecological protocols to ensure their safety.
  • Access Restrictions – Certain areas were difficult to reach, requiring strategic use of machinery and manual felling.
  • Weather Conditions – Unpredictable coastal weather made working conditions tough, but our team adapted swiftly to stay on track.

  • The Garden Nursery – Managing tree health within the horticultural setting
  • Highways Through the Estate – Keeping roads and pathways clear and safe

Addressing the Impact of Ash Decline

Like many areas across the UK, Leckford Estate has been affected by ash dieback, a devastating tree disease. Unfortunately, this has meant the removal of many declining ash trees to prevent hazards and protect the remaining woodland.

Our team has worked diligently to:

  • Identify and assess affected trees
  • Remove dangerous or dying ash trees to prevent risks
  • Reduce structural defects in remaining trees to improve longevity

For the past seven years, Climbers Way Tree Care has worked closely with Winchester Cathedral to ensure its trees remain safe, healthy, and well-managed. As one of the UK’s most historic sites, the cathedral grounds contain many veteran trees that require ongoing care and attention.

Supporting Winchester’s Annual Christmas Market

Winchester’s Christmas Market is ranked among the top 10 in the UK, attracting thousands of visitors each year. With large crowds gathering around the cathedral grounds, tree safety is a top priority. Our work helps ensure that all trees are stable and secure, allowing the event to take place without unnecessary risk.

Aerial Inspections for Ancient London Plane Trees

Veteran London Plane at Winchester Cathedral

The cathedral grounds are home to numerous veteran trees, some of which require advanced arboricultural techniques to assess their health and stability. Recently, we conducted two aerial inspections on towering 27-meter-high London Plane trees, each over 200 years old. These inspections allow us to detect potential structural weaknesses and take action before problems arise.

Aerial inspections help to:

  • Assess tree stability at height
  • Identify decay, cracks, or disease in the upper canopy
  • Determine necessary remedial work to prolong tree health

Ongoing Tree Maintenance & Safety Work

Our work is guided by scheduled tree surveys that identify potential safety risks across the university’s extensive campus. Once hazards are flagged, we carry out targeted tree surgery to mitigate risks and maintain the health of the trees.

Our key services include:

  • Identifying and addressing safety concerns through expert tree assessments
  • Pruning to prevent overgrowth encroaching on surrounding buildings
  • Reducing weight loads on mature trees to extend their lifespan
  • General tree health maintenance and preservation

Preserving Veteran Oak Trees: A Specialist Project

One of our most notable projects involved the crown reduction of 17 mature veteran oak trees. These trees, positioned near residential properties, required careful reduction of 1–3 meters to alleviate excess weight while ensuring adequate clearance for neighbouring homes.

This delicate process aimed to:

  • Reduce structural stress on these ancient oaks
  • Enhance long-term tree stability and health
  • Maintain a balance between safety and conservation

Why the University Trusts Climbers Way Tree Care

  • 10+ years of experience managing the university’s tree stock

For the past eight years, Climbers Way Tree Care has worked closely with Savills Estate Agents, providing expert tree surveys across multiple sites in Oxfordshire and Hampshire. These estates, spanning bridleways, public footpaths, and high-traffic areas, require ongoing monitoring to ensure tree safety and longevity.

Our Approach: Proactive Tree Management

We conduct walkover defect surveys, identifying potential hazards and categorizing them by urgency. This method ensures that any dangerous trees or structural weaknesses are addressed promptly, keeping landowners compliant and the public safe.

Each tree is assessed for:

  • Structural weaknesses
  • Signs of disease or decay
  • Overhanging limbs in high-traffic zones
  • Root instability or soil movement

Once surveyed, our reports provide clear, prioritised action plans. Remedial works are assigned a time category based on risk level, ensuring that high-risk trees are dealt with swiftly while lower-priority concerns are scheduled appropriately.

High-Traffic Areas Demand High Standards

Many of the surveyed areas include bridleways, footpaths, and busy public routes. These locations present unique challenges, as they see constant use from pedestrians, cyclists, and horse riders. Any unmanaged tree risks could pose serious liability concerns for landowners and estate managers.

By systematically assessing these areas, we help prevent incidents, mitigate risks, and ensure the longevity of these green spaces for both public enjoyment and estate sustainability.

Remedial Works: Our Role in Follow-Up Action

Following our surveys, we either:

  • Complete the recommended tree surgery and maintenance ourselves, ensuring expert execution.
  • Provide detailed reports to estate managers who then allocate the work to other contractors.

When tasked with remedial works, our tree surgery team handles:

  • Deadwood removal to prevent falling hazards
  • Tree felling for severely compromised trees
  • Crown reductions and pruning to maintain safety clearances
  • Bracing and support systems for structurally weak trees

Why Savills Trusts Climbers Way Tree Care

  • Experience – Nearly a decade of working on large-scale estate surveys.
  • Compliance – Ensuring estates meet legal and safety standards.
  • Efficiency – Delivering clear reports with actionable solutions.
  • Professionalism – Trusted by estate managers to manage high-profile properties.

The Ongoing Partnership

As estate landscapes evolve, so do their tree management needs. Our ongoing work with Savills ensures that potential risks are spotted early, estate managers stay informed, and vital remedial work is carried out on time.

If you manage a large estate, bridleway, or public-use land, regular tree surveys are essential. Get in touch with Climbers Way Tree Care to discuss your tree management needs and how we can help keep your land safe and compliant.
