Forestry England Tree Surgery Framework

Safe, skilled and responsive tree care across the Forests of the Midlands and West

Climbers Way Tree Care has been appointed to the Forestry England framework for tree surgery and tree safety works across the Midlands and West areas.

The framework supports Forestry England’s work as the custodian of the nation’s public forests. These are busy, sensitive places. People visit them to walk, cycle, ride, learn and enjoy nature. Trees must be managed with care, skill and a clear focus on public safety.

The Client

Forestry England manages public forests across England. Its work supports recreation, wildlife, timber production and long-term woodland health.

For this framework, Forestry England needs trusted tree surgery contractors who can deliver planned and emergency tree works across large forest areas. Works may take place near paths, car parks, buildings, utilities, highways, heritage features, watercourses and protected habitats.

The Challenge

Tree safety work in public forests is complex.

Sites can be remote, busy, steep, wet, exposed or hard to reach. Some jobs involve dangerous trees, windblown stems, storm damage or trees close to roads and public access routes.

Forestry England also requires a fast response. Planned works must be managed within agreed timescales. Emergency works may need teams on site within hours, including weekends and bank holidays.

The work also has to protect the wider forest. That means taking care around bats, nesting birds, badgers, watercourses, heritage features, ground conditions and retained trees.

The Scope of Works

The framework covers a wide range of tree surgery, tree safety works and arboricultural services.

  • Tree felling and sectional dismantling
  • Winch-assisted felling and windblown tree clearance
  • Ground-based and aerial pruning
  • Crown lifting, crown reduction and pollarding
  • MEWP tree works
  • Storm damage clean-up
  • Brush clearance and chipper works
  • Stump grinding and stump treatment
  • Traffic management near roads and public routes
  • Bat scoping checks and ecological awareness on site
  • Written tree reports where required

Our Approach

Climbers Way Tree Care delivers this work with a simple aim: keep people safe, protect the forest and complete each job to a high standard.

Before work starts, our team reviews the site information, maps, access points, constraints and work instructions. We prepare site-specific risk assessments and method statements, then brief the team before any tools are started.

On site, we use safe work zones, clear signs, the right machinery and trained staff. We work to the agreed specification and keep Forestry England teams informed from start to finish.

Where public access is nearby, we plan works to reduce disruption. Where trees have high habitat or amenity value, we use practical judgement. The safest option is chosen, but unnecessary tree removal is avoided where retention is possible.

Technical Standards

Forestry England’s framework requires work to be delivered in line with recognised industry standards and legal duties.

Climbers Way Tree Care works to BS 3998:2010 Tree Work Recommendations, Arboricultural Association guidance, AFAG guidance, FISA safety guides and relevant UK health and safety law.

This includes safe working under PUWER, LOLER, Work at Height Regulations, FISA emergency planning guidance and Chapter 8 traffic management where required.

Public Safety and Community Value

Forestry England sites are public spaces. They matter to local people, visitors and communities.

Our work helps keep paths, tracks, car parks, recreation areas and forest routes safe and usable. It also supports Forestry England’s wider duty of care across large tree populations.

We understand that tree safety works can raise questions from visitors and neighbours. Our team acts with care, explains work when asked and treats each site with respect.

Environmental Care

Forest work must protect more than people. It must protect soil, water, wildlife and retained trees too.

Climbers Way Tree Care follows strong environmental controls on site. This includes clean machinery, spill kits, careful fuel storage, biodegradable chain oil where required, biosecurity measures and protection of sensitive features.

Where bats, nesting birds, badgers or other protected species may be present, work is planned with care. If a possible roost, nest or protected feature is found, works stop and the right advice is sought before moving forward.
